There are many reasons why this can happen with your goldfish, including incurable diseases such as mycobacteriosis and bacterial damage to the swim bladder, but still the most common cause of this disease will be improper feeding.

Many aquarists think that a goldfish, when feeding on floating dry food, swallows air inwards and the coordination of its movements is disturbed. This is not true. The fact is that the golden fish is bred from a crucian carp, which, like its closest relative, a carp, is a big fan of “poking”. these fish emit characteristic smacking sounds from the surface of the water, a bacterial film, small insects, duckweed and other food. In this case, all the swallowed air instantly rushes up to the surface of the water through the gills. In nature, we will not meet crucians and carp "Changeling." Not without reason, all major feed manufacturers produce floating pellets for goldfish and koi carps.

The problem of gold floating upwards in the belly is still directly related to food, namely its quality. Carp fish do not have a stomach, only intestines, a wild ancestor of a goldfish. a crucian is omnivorous, but more than half of its diet is vegetable food. Since there is no stomach, there are no enzymes that decompose animal proteins. Therefore, with monotonous feeding with live foods with a high protein content, for example, a pipe maker or bloodworms, we will soon get rotting processes in the intestines, with an intense accumulation of gases and, as a result, buoyancy disturbance. The same is true when feeding with dry feed with a high content of animal protein.

In addition to the accumulation of gases in the intestines, high protein feed of animal origin can lead to obesity. First of all, the liver of a goldfish will suffer. it will increase in size and become covered with fatty layers, while it may become a competitor of the swim bladder. it will push the fish to the surface and turn it over.

Do not forget that the body of pedigree goldfish has the shape of a ball. this is a genetic deviation fixed by selection, causing deformation of the location of the internal organs. We call such fish short-headed goldfish; these include all the breeds most popular with aquarists. oranda, telescope, pearl, riukin, and so on. Due to these features of the internal structure, any pathological changes in the internal organs. from liver obesity to rotting processes in the intestines, caused by the consumption of high-protein foods of animal origin, can lead to disruption of normal buoyancy.

Low-quality dry food can also negatively affect the coordination of movements. The non-optimized composition of such feeds does not allow them to immediately get wet in the water, voracious goldfish very quickly fill a full belly. Then this food swells already in the intestines, causing swelling and soon our golden one is already swimming up the belly.

For the prevention of the above cases, we recommend the use of high-quality dry feed, designed specifically for feeding goldfish, such as the line of feed Tetra Goldfish. If your goldfish rolls over, you used low-quality dry food, or monotonous feeding with live high-protein food, it is recommended to change the diet in favor of special food, before that let the fish starve for a couple of days.
