How To Transport Aquarium Fish

Before settling the aquarium, it is necessary to purchase the water pets themselves and properly deliver them home so that they do not die during the process of moving.

Transportation of a fish tank requires careful preparation so that the inhabitants of the water area do not experience stress and do not die. After reading our article, you will learn everything about transportation, including long-distance and winter.

Types of aquarium fish transportation

There are several types of transportation of aquarium fish. They depend on the distance of the trip, the time of year and the individual characteristics of the pets (Figure 1).

Depending on the time spent on the trip transportation is:

  • short term. use transparent containers without sharp corners. The container is shaded, the temperature of the water is selected for a certain type;
  • long. use a multilayer package of polyethylene, which is placed in a foam box. Due attention is paid to the oxygen content.

In addition, you need to know how to transport them in winter and summer. Thus, in the warm season, preferably warm-water fish are transported. To reduce the temperature using additional containers with cold water, add pieces of ice. For enrichment of water with oxygen using microcompressors.

In winter, you can transport species that live in cold water. The container is wrapped in a thick cloth, felt, newspaper.

Note: Transportation can be carried out on any transport, but when exporting abroad, be sure to prepare the accompanying veterinary documents.

You should also consider the individual characteristics of the species. For example, fish with pulmonary or skin respiration normally tolerate transportation in packages with a small amount of water. For labyrinth fish, the liquid should be well saturated with oxygen, and if you transport fish with spikes, they should be placed in dense three-layer bags.

To prepare the fish for transportation, special tools and certain manipulations will be needed to preserve the individuals themselves and their habitat (Figure 2).

Necessary things and tools

During transportation, it is advisable to transport not only the inhabitants of the water area, but also the scenery and the ground. In order to catch fish, you will need a net, bags or buckets for storing pets, as well as settled water to fill the tanks.

In addition, it is necessary to prepare in advance the packaging for packaging, and separate containers for water, sand, plants and decorations.

Cleaning scenery and plants

First you need to check the readiness and purity of the container. Next, plants folded in a special package without water. The decorations, if they are not heavy, can be placed in an aquarium or better in a bucket.

In no case should all decorative elements and plants be washed out in order not to disturb the internal microflora of a closed reservoir.

If you decide to clean the tank on the day of the move, it will be great to let the soil through the siphon to remove debris and dirt. Pour turbid water and collect the smaller half of the aquarium clean water, which we move to a new location.

So it will be more convenient to catch water pets. For large fish, ask for help from relatives for insurance. The net must be suitable for the size of individuals.

If the fish will be in containers for a long time before the start of transportation, then the big fish need to create aeration.

Soil removal

After the ground is cleared and all inhabitants are removed from the aquarium, you can drain the remaining water and pack the soil and stones in a separate container.

The soil is not washed, since the biological balance in the new aquarium will be generated by this organic matter.

How to fold aquarium

After cleaning the aquarium from the decorations, sand and water, the container must be thoroughly rinsed. After that, it is packaged in a separate container, which will help prevent chips and cracks on the surface of the container (Figure 3).

Particularly carefully packaged corner joints and front glass. The whole process needs to be done as quickly as possible in order to move and launch the pets and not incur losses.

How to transport over long distances

Transportation over long distances is a complex task that requires a certain amount of training and knowledge.

To save all individuals and not to injure them, you need to follow some recommendations. (Figure 4):

  • For long shipments it is not recommended to use solid containers. It is better to take multi-layer plastic bags that are placed in a thermo bag or foam boxes.
  • Such a container can be built by inserting one package into another and pulling the bottom corners with tape or rubber.
  • The package is filled with water for one quarter and launch aquatic inhabitants. The hose from the compressor is lowered into the water, air is released from the bag, it is clamped from above and filled with oxygen.
  • After that, the hose is removed, the package is twisted and fixed with an elastic band. This procedure is done with all the packages, then wrapped in a multi-layered newspaper and placed in a box, shifting it with ice.
  • Free spaces between the packages are filled with a crumpled newspaper. The temperature should be stable, for this it is better to use special plastic thermal containers. Do not forget about the density of landing, because the longer the trip, the lower should be the density of landing.

Transportation should be carried out carefully, avoiding sharp blows of the box and strong pitching. It is systematically necessary to check the condition of the fish and, if necessary, pump oxygen into the bags.

Anesthesia is also used for long-term transport; in other words, the fish are put to sleep. This increases the density of landing, but the risk of death is also great.

How to transport aquarium fish in winter

Such transportation is practically no different from the usual. The main difficulty is to prevent overcooling of water in tanks. To do this, you can put in a box warmers or bottles of hot water.

In addition, the container can be wrapped with a cloth or newspapers, and if transportation is carried out by car, then the box can be simply put in the salon and wrapped up. But it is best to use a thermal bag that will help maintain a stable temperature.
