Guppy. aquarium fish, known to all. They can be contained in the most Spartan conditions. With good care, they will be pleased with bright colors and fancy shapes of tails.
Guppies. for beginner aquarists
guppy aquarium fish
Guppies. aquarium fish of small size and bright, interesting color. Anyone who ever encounters aquarist knows about them. All experienced fish farmers inhabited their first aquarium guppies.
Fish have a unique survival rate. No matter how inexperienced the beginner aquarist, these fish will surely survive with him. For their maintenance do not need complex water systems and expensive equipment. They will survive even in a three-liter jar. The flocks of these babies were found in the rivers of central Russia, where the warm drains merge. These are the descendants of the collections of hapless aquarium owners.
Guppies have their own unique services to genetics. They served as a wonderful material for studying the transmission of hereditary traits and species changes. Similar processes can be observed at home by an attentive fish factory.
And in nature there are Kalik guppies or the Endler guppies!
The experience of settling these small fish to fight the larvae of the anopheles mosquito in the shallow waters of India, Africa and America has been successful. Nimble little fish dramatically reduced the population of the carrier of a serious disease.
The origin and birthplace of guppy fish
The homeland of guppy aquarium fish is the north of the South American continent. Their flocks are common in rivers and lakes of Venezuela, Guiana, the famous islands of Trinidad and Barbados. For a long time, the Europeans transported them to the Old World in order to revitalize garden ponds and palace fountains. Fish quickly settle down in warm-water reservoirs with fresh water. Since then, the appearance has changed a lot: the fish’s homeland would not have recognized it now. Instead of nondescript tailed babies, we can now observe luxurious individuals of deep malachite, blue, red, marble-tailed, bicoloured, as well as with the upper fin, fluttering like an aviator scarf.
Creating living conditions and content
When breeding breeding species of guppies, the fish require special content. For thoroughbred specimens, an aquarium that holds at least 50 liters of water is required. Here you have to take care of the level of acidity of water. about 7 pH, and hardness. up to 25 dH. For ordinary, not purebred fish, it is enough just to defend the water for about a day or just to pass it through a household filter.
The water temperature in the aquarium, optimal for fish. about 24 degrees. If the temperature is lower, up to 18 degrees, the individuals are able to live longer, but they easily pick up the disease. An increase in temperature leads to shredding and shortening of the life cycle. How long do guppies live on average? Males. from 2.5 years to 3, larger and dimmed females. from 3.5 years to 4.
In the aquarium at the bottom it is better to pour coarse sand or small pebbles, place several bushes of unpretentious plants. This is more for external aesthetics than for the fish themselves. Among aquatic plants, such as salvinia, fry guppies like to hide; adult individuals do very well without thickets. But willingly eat small flood plants.
Guppies. aquarium fish are quite active. They love to jump out of the water. Therefore, the aquarium should be closed with a lid, and the height of the rim above the water level to leave seven centimeters.
Fish retain intense color in good light. It is better to combine artificial lighting with the help of fluorescent-colored lamps, and solar lighting during the daylight hours. Thoroughbred specimens need to install good devices for filtering and aerating water.
What to feed
If the aquarium is started up for a child, parents should explain to him in detail how to care for him. An important point is the rules of feeding fish. Overfeeding will precipitate feed to the bottom. Water from this spoils faster. It is recommended to replace it by one third every week, and to change it completely every four months. Undernourishment will reduce the brightness of males. Adults should be fed once a day, preferably at a certain hour, in small portions.
So, how to feed the guppy fish? Any food, say experienced fish farmers.
dry fish food Tetra
Without much damage, fish can fast for two weeks. Once a week it is recommended to arrange a fasting day for them.
Guppies, the reproduction of which occurs with little or no special conditions, belong to viviparous species. Males and females acquire the ability to reproduce from about four months of age.
Approximation of childbirth can be determined by the shape of the female’s abdomen: it acquires a peculiar angular shape. A female should be deposited in a separate container. When the fry are born, it is returned to the general aquarium. Fish are quite capable to eat their own fry. Therefore, the babies should be held separately for some time until they are old enough.
There are specific diseases of guppy fish.
In males, the tail may split or break. It spoils their appearance. The reasons for such trouble may be related crossbreeding, improper or inadequate feeding, rarely replaced water, insufficient oxygen enrichment of water. Individuals with defects should be transplanted into a separate aquarium, monitor the conditions of detention and change the mode of feeding.
Another disease is compression of the fins. To it lead changing conditions in the aquarium. fluctuations in temperature or composition of the water, poor-quality feeding. For the treatment of males, a solution of sea or table salt is introduced into the water.
Diseases of aquarium guppies are somehow related to the state of the fins. "Red scab" appears as a raid on the caudal fin. If you do not take action, it will eat the whole tail. The affected areas will have to be removed with a sharp blade, and saline should be added to the water. An important condition for the recovery of the fish. increased aeration of the aquarium.
Compatibility of guppies with other fish is a serious moment in creating an aquarium. These fish do not fight among themselves or with other species. But they themselves can suffer from aggressive fish. they can pluck tail fins, depriving them of the most beautiful part of the body. Therefore, fish such as, for example, barbs should be kept separately.
It is also impossible to contain them with predatory fish. Predators will gradually eat all small fish.
What fish get on with guppies? In the aquarium, neons, danios-rerio, petilles, terntions, tetras will get along well with them. They are also quite peaceful and small in size. In addition, in the aquarium, you can plant bottom fish. small catfish, fighting, fish, knife. Good luck to you!
