Hello everyone, Andrei Selitsky is with you again and I am writing another useful article for you. I beg your pardon for having delayed a bit with the post, there were a lot of things to do. Today’s publication will be devoted to feed for aquarium fish. When a novice starts an aquarium, first of all he needs to know how to care for aquarium plants, aquarium fish and how to maintain an aquarium.
So, let’s say he read it all and as they say, in all weapons. However, it is also necessary to know what to feed your underwater pets, you will not keep them on a starvation diet, will you?) Properly chosen fish food is a guarantee of their health, so take it seriously. Now I switch directly to the post.
I just want to warn you that in this article I will not describe in detail all sorts of food, for the time being I just classify them and explain what for. You better subscribe to blog updates, so as not to miss the next useful article.
Dry feeds include all kinds of tablets, flakes and granules. such feeds are perhaps the most popular when keeping tropical fish species. The most famous flakes. this type of dry food is ideal for medium-sized fish, and for small ones. But they also use tablets and granules of various sizes. In such feeds, usually a small percentage of the moisture content (not more than 4 percent). This does not allow various microorganisms to spoil food for prematurely, that is, mold fungi and various bacteria will not start there. The advantage is that such food will be stored for a very long time.
The advantages of dry food can be attributed to the fact that after feeding there will not be much dirt in your aquarium, unlike pasty food (but there are exceptions). Most of the aquarium fish perfectly adapt to such feed. Now a lot of aquarists grow different types of fish that feed on dry and live food.
Remember: When you buy dry food, try to choose a quality product, but not a surrogate, which does not have enough nutrients, or there are simply none.
But do not forget that, for example, in the squad and tsikhlovy groups there are such varieties that are radically different in the type of feeding. So universal feed simply does not exist, which would be perfect for all types of fish. As a rule, the sinking feed cannot be universal. since it will not be able to satisfy the various nutritional needs of catfish and bindlings, because among them both carnivorous fish and herbivorous can be found.
I want to note the good quality of freeze-dried feed. These are such feeds that are obtained by drying at a low temperature, which could be a live feed for the fish. for example, a pipe sweeper or bloodworm. In this case, the preparation of food for aquarium fish, excessive moisture comes out of it, and this has almost no effect on the nutrient content.
How to store dry food?
Despite the fact that most varieties of aquarium fish can only eat dry food, all sorts of diets will only benefit them. Sometimes try to give the fish to chew on ice cream feed. These foods are widely used by aquarists and they are stored in the freezers of your refrigerators. If such food was frozen by an industrial method, then during the freezing process, gamma rays could be used, which kill almost all pathogenic microorganisms that could harm aquarium fishes. On this basis, frozen food subject to gamma-ray treatment will be safer for your fish than live food.
If you bought frozen food for your fish, it is advisable to defrost it before feeding, by sending a stream of cold water from the tap to it. Only then can you feed the fish. If such operations are not performed, then the fish stomach can be very cool. Moreover, if there are ice crystals in the feed, they can pierce the intestines of small fish, which is not good. However, in spite of this, I feed the fish without defrosting the food and have not observed any problems so far. Although it would not hurt to be a bit more cautious, once a year, as they say, the stick shoots 🙂 When you defrost the food a little, remove the liquid contents, the fish will not eat it anyway, and this muck may just ruin your water in the aquarium.
Often, live food aquarists include in the diet for their pets. For example, fish that feed on the surface can easily eat terrestrial and aquatic insects in huge quantities. The insect fell on the surface of the water and because of the surface film can not get out. And then, unfortunately, the fish swam. Other species of fish that live at the very bottom look for larvae of aquatic insects, crustaceans and worms that live in bottom sediments in the ground.
I want to say that providing aquarium fish with natural invertebrate food is an almost impossible task for most aquarium enthusiasts. But some things you can get yourself all the same, for example, bloodworms and small crustaceans. Unlike the others, live food has a number of impressive advantages. they have a great nutritional value, since they are not processed at all. An exception can be called freezing moth. In order to protect my inhabitants, I freeze the crank, just in case. Fish eat it perfectly in any form. whether they are frozen or fresh.
But do not forget about the natural instincts of fish. they prefer to move prey. However, I solved this problem very simply. when I feed the fish, I turn off the filter. As soon as the feeding process has come to an end, I turn on the filter and the fish are more willing to collect the uneaten food. The main negative aspect in feeding aquarium pets with live food is the risk of bringing any sores and a lot of parasites into their aquarium. This filth can exist in the tissues of your live food, plus the water in which this live food was collected can be a source for all kinds of parasites and diseases. Some crustaceans, such as the Cyclops, may contain the larvae of the parasite-worms (helminths), and the Tubber can contain the pathogenic viruses or protozoan parasites.
An exception can be considered live food, which were grown in open systems in which there were no fish. Such food is less likely to cause illness of your underwater pets. With the help of special water treatment or purification of live food, you can protect yourself from part of the parasites and harmful microorganisms. But I immediately warn you, do not rely heavily on such procedures, since you will not be able to kill the causative agents of most diseases that are full of in live food.
A lot of products that feed people, and you can give your fish. For example, frozen vegetables (peas, fresh cucumber and spinach) are perfect for herbivores and omnivores. Part of the frozen food fish will be difficult to digest, so they should be processed as necessary before feeding. Peas are better to cook, so you soften it and be able to remove the skin. Lettuce or spinach is best blanched, so undigested fiber is destroyed.
In no case do not feed the fish with meat of mammals or birds, so you protect your pets from the accumulation of completely unhealthy fats in the liver. However, there are such aquarists who still take risks and give fish a liver or beef heart.
In principle, the feed is all. Read my blog post on how to care for aquarium fish, it will be very useful. And be sure to subscribe to blog updates, so you will not miss the next post.
