Barbus. aquarium fish in their natural habitat in Africa, China and South Asia. There is quite a large number of their species. They are perfect aquarists with little experience, as unpretentious and highly active. If your aquarium is already populated, then you need to know the compatibility of barbs with other fish. New tenants with the wrong selection can make the "old men" real pressure.
For a closer acquaintance with colorful fish is better to know their features and character.
Barbs belonging to the carp family can reach quite large sizes in the wild. 50 cm. Aquarium inhabitants of this size do not have (except for the shark ball, growing to 35 cm), their average size is 4 cm. 10 cm, depending on the type.
On a yellow flat little body with a silvery sheen there are black vertically arranged stripes. Males can be recognized by the bright red edging on all fins except the pair. Females are characterized by larger parameters and less bright fins, and sometimes a complete lack of color.
Breeding work led to a rich variation of the bright colors of this fish. For example, a beautiful emerald color was obtained for almost the entire body of a mutant barbus.
Behavioral features and character
It is a great pleasure to watch the daily adventures of funny fishes that actively manifest themselves in an aquarium. They coexist well with fish of similar characters, but do not like sluggish ones. Owners of long and veiform fins will not give rest to small bullies. Being a 50% predator, the barbus often shows aggression, hunting for neighboring tails and fins and biting them. Such a feature determines the careful selection of possible neighbors for hooligan fish. Calm and serenity they are completely not peculiar. Predatory fish loves to eat less fish and fry, so you need to keep them apart from each other.
Do not keep in the aquarium more than 6 barbs. Fish will either sort things out between themselves, or a pack of flocks will begin to poison the rest of the pets. If a flock of barbs with a poem is small, the aggression of the species will also be great.
General rules for compatibility
In general, peace-loving barbs in certain circumstances show their harmful and aggressive nature. To maintain order in the aquarium and avoid possible injuries during fights should:
- Buy a spacious large-sized aquarium. Due to the lack of space, the bullies will start fights with other inhabitants trying to seize the territory.
- Provide aquarium plants. When the little pestilence starts to pester the rest of the fish, they will have the opportunity to hide.
- Purchase representatives of different species. In this case, the disassembly will be arranged only within the species, and these fish can stand up for themselves.
- To protect live-bearing fish, otherwise all fry will be exterminated.
- Watch for a sufficient amount of food, otherwise the fish will begin to fight for it.
- To distinguish between the habitats of barbs and fish with long fins.
- Do not keep with slow fish.
- Do not allow in one tank with barbs of smaller fish..
If you comply with all these provisions, then peace will reign in the aquarium, and barbs will not create conflicts. However, all the fish are unique and it is worth considering their features separately.
In order to create friendly neighbors, you should pay attention to fast fish: zebrafish, ternation, congo, tsikhlazomy, diamond tetras and most of the catfish (speckled, tarakatuma). Semi-mobile fish, on the contrary, should not be allowed to go to the barbs. Because of the nature of the character and appearance also fit fighting, gourami and swordsmen.
These fish are a lot like barbs. They are fast and hate long fins. However, a fight may become aggressive to other fish if it is alone in an aquarium. To solve this problem, it is worth keeping them in small flocks.
Active fish who love to move fast. Its minus is in large fins attracting a barb. At the same time the barbs get along well with them in the general aquarium, since the speed of these fish exceeds the restless predators. However, do not forget about aquatic plants to create shelters.
Active and fast fish living in schools. The absence of long fins and high speed of movement help to avoid quarrels.
Due to the fact that barbs usually live in the upper or middle water layer, and catfish prefer a calm bottom, there is no conflict in these fish.
Gourami surpasses its size barbs. The calm and mobility characteristic of this fish helps it get along with these restless ones. However, with the Sumatran these fishes are not worth keeping, but the peace-loving cherry will suit perfectly. It is also better to share with the gouram the youngest representatives of the barbus species.
Barbs of different types
The best choice is to keep several types of barbs together. (Sumatran and fiery or cherry). The most peaceful and calm member of the family is the green barbus.
It is not recommended to sit down to the barbs of slow-moving fish: Betta Fish, Lyalius, Angelfish. There are also much more aggressive aquarium fish that should be kept separate, for example, astronotus. It is also better not to keep them with goldfish, as tropical fish, apart from their “defiant” appearance, need water at a completely different temperature. Shrimp and barbs also do not always get along well. Sumatran fish can exterminate small shrimps, but if the shrimps themselves are large in size and are predators, then the danger will be from their side.
Slow fish with large fins will definitely be attacked by treacherous semi-predators. Nevertheless, some aquarists contain them quite successfully. This requires some conditions:
- aquarium of at least 100l;
- a small number of barbs;
- large and adult scalar;
- grow together;
- First put a scalar in the aquarium.
They have a snooty character, beautiful fins and a long tail. When living together, Betta Fish and the barbs will make constant skirmishes in which beautiful fish will lose their finch.
Owners of long fins will quickly be deprived of them. Attacks from the barbs can lead to the death of fish. Long fins will be bitten, which can lead to death.
Mobility and fearfulness of the fish will be gladly received by the barbs, which will not give them rest.
The fish, which has a large size and aggressive nature, definitely will not get along with the bar.
The most aggressive aquarium fish. Real predators, quietly get along only with catfish. The barbs and cichlids can only be compatible if the latter are still small, but the adults need to be set aside, as they will definitely try to capture the territory.
In order for neons and barbs to peacefully exist, it is better to keep them in a spacious aquarium with plenty of room for shelter. For the neighborhood with them, choose the most peaceful. cherry or green barbs. It is better to sit down to the neons of the barbs even with babies.
Barbusy definitely interesting moving fish with a restless character. If you already have other fish or, on the contrary, you want to add new tenants to the barbs, be sure to consider the nature and characteristics of these small semi-predators. In the right conditions, the inhabitants of the aquarium will be very interesting to watch. Remember that Sumatrans are the most aggressive; cherry, linear and black are more peaceful, the ball is the largest, so small fish are not suitable for the neighborhood, green barbs are considered the most peaceful, but you can only keep them in a flock.
